I’m curious how many folks have transitioned to streaming services. I keep hearing that physical media like DVD and Blu-ray is passe and that streaming services like Netflix and Amazon are the wave of the future. I remain skeptical.

Hold on to Your Butts, Blu-ray fans… Feeding Time at Jurassic Park

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

We mentioned it was a virtual certainty three weeks ago, but Universal Home Video has officially announced that the Jurassic Park trilogy will be released on Blu-ray on October 25. Pre-orders on not yet open but expect that to soon follow.

Jurassic Park

Again, this is only the trilogy and you will not be able to buy the films individually at first, a disappointment for those not made of money or those with an understandable disdain for the two sequels. (more…)

This Was No (Digitally Enhanced) Boat Accident!

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

First for the news: we have no shortage of rumors concerning some essential movies due on Blu-ray either this year or during 2012 (The Abyss, Lawrence of Arabia, The Right Stuff), but at least two of the near certainties belong to Steven Spielberg. His 1993 blockbuster, Jurassic Park is scheduled for late this year. Unfortunately for those of you who have an allergic reaction to its two lesser sequels, it appears that all we’re getting at first is a trilogy boxset.

The big news, pretty much confirmed by Spielberg in an extensive interview with “Quint” at AintItCool.com, is that the granddaddy of all summer movies, Jaws, will hit Blu-ray sometime in 2012.

Citizen Kane is coming to Blu-Ray

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Just thought you’d like to know that Orson Welles’ masterpiece Citizen Kane, thought by some to be the best film ever made, is coming to Blu-ray for it’s 70th anniversary. It’s being released in two BD versions, one by itself and one bundled with The Magnificent Ambersons on DVD. The price is a little steep at the moment, $45 on Amazon for just the movie.

The bundle is probably a better deal at only five bucks more for both movies.

Let Film Be Film

Friday, May 6th, 2011

The advent of HDTV and Blu-ray has introduced what can only be described as a small cultural divide into the ranks of film and home theater buffs. While any film from the eighties (or seventies or even early nineties) could stand in, I’ll use my old favorite Ghostbusters to illustrate.

When the Blu-ray edition of this classic movie arrived, opinion on the picture quality was sharply divided. (more…)

April Fools! (Toshiba to Sue Everyone Who Didn’t Buy HD DVD)

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Toshiba, the chief backer of HD DVD, the loser in the high-def disc format wars, has announced what it calls a “reverse class-action” suit against every household that failed purchase an HD DVD player since the format launched in 2006. The lawsuit charges that, by failing to support HD DVD, their non-customers “handed the format war to Blu-ray on a silver platter and deprived future customer of their right to make a choice.” (more…)

Feelin’ Blu: A Postwar Guide to Blu-ray

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

blu-ray-logo.gifThe victory of Blu-ray over HD DVD means that it is now safe (well, safer) to whip out the credit card and plunk it down on a player. However, is it a good time to buy or are you better off waiting? The answer to this question is, as usual, “it depends.”

In this case, the factors are how much you’re willing to spend, your current home theater setup, and what you demand from your movie viewing experience.

R.I.P. HD DVD (2002-2008)

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

It’s over.

The white flag has flown. The tattered remnants of the Red army have laid down their arms. The bitter conflict that has divided the land is now decided. It is time for the period of reconciliation to begin.

Today, February 19, 2008, the final nails were driven into the coffin of HD DVD. Toshiba, the driving force behind the format, announced that they were ceasing development of new players and technology. Universal Studios, the most stalwart of the format’s supporters, announced that it would start releasing movies on Blu-ray. The dominos that started to fall on January 4th, when Warner Brothers announced their plans to go Blu-ray exclusive, are all now down.
