King Kong (2005)

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

Then what kind of person are you, Mr. Denham?

Now that it’s hit the video shelves, King Kong (see original review) has been cemented in box office history as a hugely profitable failure. Its half-billion dollar take was a huge disappointment compared to the desperately unrealistic hopes of a movie industry still reeling from a year of disappointments. Kong was supposed to ride in on a white horse and single-handedly rescue 2005 with a gross that would make Titanic look like Heaven’s Gate. I guess that was too much too expect for one film. Either that or the white horse just collapsed under the weight of the 25-foot gorilla on its back.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

Forty is the new twenty.

Hey, I went to see a juvenile sex comedy and an actual love story broke out. The 40-Year-Old Virgin manages to shoehorn two wildly disparate storylines successfully into one film. On one hand, you have a raunchy workplace comedy about a trio of sex-starved low-lifes working in a store that suspiciously resembles Circuit City, while on the other you have a surprisingly sweet romantic comedy about two people with more on their mind than the horizontal lambada.

Everything is Illuminated (2005)

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

I’m not a writer. I mean, I write, but I’m more of a collector, really.

Liev Schreiber exhibits a masterful control of tone and character in this quirky film that shifts seamlessly from quirky ethnic slapstick to something more transcendentally elegiac. Everything is Illuminated also holds its secrets close until the end without cheating the audience at all.
