I agree with Biff's first comment, especially about her age ... but I have always loved this movie. Swanson's total descent into madness at the end is so tragic. I have never seen the musical and have no interest in doing so. But does anyone remember Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman satirizing this movie? Very funny.

After finally seeing Sunset Boulevard, I started seeing Gods and Monsters as sort of a loose, unofficial remake. It's not close enough to be called an actual remake but I think there were interesting parallels.

Hi Paul,

Just found your blog- wow really interesting. I am really into movies too. i keep a list of all the movies with good reviews that I want to watch in order not to miss out!
I have not seen Sunset B the movie however, I have seen it at the theatre. Great performance and lovely story.
I have set up a blog to write beginners song lyrics to real events going on in my life.
I hope to make them an interesting read. I am currently working on one as draft at the mo. Not published anything yet.
Maybe you will keep an eye out for mine and have a read some time.
Keep up the good work.
Jai.

It never occurred to me that Gods and Monsters might be construed as a re-make of Sunset Boulevard, but now that I think about it I think you're right.

Incidentally, I loved Gods and Monsters, finding the old man's still-vivid memories of the horrors of the trenches of World War 1 to be particularly moving.

Yours is an excellent review of a movie so relevant to today that it is timeless.

One interesting aspect of this film is Norma Desmond's age - about fifty. But by today's standards she would be taken for about seventy, judging by her looks and demeanor.

If Sunset Boulevard were to be remade, I could see the seventy-plus Shirley Maclaine as Norma.

Having said that, I hope a re-make of this film will never be made for it is nonpereil, and to re-make it would be almost a desecration.

Sunset Boulevard also shows
that shooting a film in black-and-white can add to its power.

I'm told that many contemporary directors would love to make their movies in black-and-white, but fear that the movie-going public, having been nurtured on an unceasing diet of colour TV and movies, would never never buy it, and is perhaps why so many black-and-white films of the past have been digitally colourized in their DVD incarnations - a desecration, if ever there was one.
