This movie has a lot of memories for me. When I was a kid, maybe seven or eight, my father rented it on videotape for me and my sister. He said it was "important." As the movie began, I saw myself in Scout and her brother's innocent childhood. I shuddered as the wild dog terrorized the neighborhood. But I was riveted during the courtroom scenes--I could not look away for a second. For me, at eight years old, the trial of Tom Robinson was when I first understood how ugly and inhumane racism really is. When Tom was killed, I cried angrily. I had never seen something happen so unfairly, in my young girl's world. Afterward, as Atticus spoke softly to his daughter, I learned that there is dignity and love in a world that can be so cruel. This was my father's way of teaching me about life. I think To Kill a Mockingbird is the finest example of cinematic education.

I began my fantasy love-affair with Gregory Peck based on this film. He plays Atticus Finch so stoically, so poised and justly that it still makes me cry when everyone in the courtroom stands up: "You're father's passin'".
On a side note, Robert Duvall's near-silent portrayal of Boo is pure genius. Duvall utilizes all of the lighting that he can to create a clear representation of the character's subtext so cleverly for a black & white film.

Don't know who filmed it, though. Do you know? Just curious.
